‘It All Begins With An Idea’

Bespoke Sculptures Hand carved From NZ Timbers

Kevin McCardell

A self taught sculptor for many years, I work from my gallery situated in Tauranga, in the Bay Of Plenty. I am privileged to be able to create realistic ‘Kiwi’ themed sculptures. As well as object art, what I call ‘Fabric of Life’, clothing pieces are my favorite subjects, and my work is sold both in NZ and internationally.

Part of my passion for wood carving is the challenge of creating this illusion of reality in my sculptures, in order to achieve an emotional response from the viewer. Sculpture that evokes memories and emotions ,can remind us of a connection to ourselves and others.

Though I use differing timbers, ancient ‘Swamp’ Kauri is my favoured choice of material. Through the manipulation of the wood, using chisels, sandpaper, and tools of my own making, the blank timber takes on a new life, becoming a unique piece of sculpture that will endure for years to come.

DECLARATION

“All pieces are one-off handmade sculptures. Although a subject may be repeated, the design is always different, hence, each piece is unique. “
